Cherry Yum Yum Dessert Recipe
I want to say thank you to the Edgewood High School Band. If it wasn’t for the amazing cook book they compiled in 1972, then I would have never discovered this amazingly easy no bake dessert recipe.
The original recipe calls for Dream Whip which takes me right back to Grandma’s kitchen in the 90s. I always remember seeing boxes of Dream Whip in her cabinet.
Believe it or not, you can still find Dream Whip at the grocery store; however, it is easily substituted for a container of Cool Whip or whipped topping.
Why I love this Recipe
I mean, what’s not to love. The recipe includes layers of sweet whipped topping, cherry pie, and buttery graham cracker crust. Plus, this is a go to recipe for the holidays, picnics and any occasion when you need to serve a crowd since it makes a large pan, and it’s always a hit.
How to make cherry yum yum?
Step by Step Instructions
- Crush graham cracker crumbs, and melt butter. Combine the two, and take half the mixture and press into the bottom of a 13 x 9 inch baking dish.
- Using a stand mixer, electric mixer or hand mixer, blend softened cream cheese, granulated sugar and vanilla extract.
- If using Dream Whip, whip the dry mix with milk until soft peaks form. Skip this step if you are using Cool Whip instead.
- Fold Dream Whip mixture or Cool Whip (whichever you decide to use) into the cream cheese mixture.
- Spread half the cream cheese mixture over the layer of graham crackers.
- Top with cherry pie filling (all of it).
- Spread the remaining cream cheese mixture over top the canned cherry pie filling.
- Sprinkle the remaining crumb mixture over the top.
- Cover tightly with a tight-fitting lid or with plastic wrap. Refrigerate overnight or for several hours.
Storage Instructions
Store the leftovers in an airtight container or wrapped tightly in the refrigerator. Be sure to never double dip into the dessert which can cause it to become watery.

Can cherry yum yum be frozen?
Yes, cherry yum yum can be frozen. Be sure to wrap the dessert tightly with either a double layer of plastic wrap, or one layer of plastic wrap and a tight-fitting lid. If you use Dream Whip in you no bake cherry yum yum, it could slightly change the texture during the freezing process.
Can Dream Whip be substituted for Cool Whip?
Yes, substitute one envelope of Dream Whip (1.3 ounces dry mix) plus 1/2 cup milk or half and half for an 8 ounce carton of Cool Whip or visa versa.
What is Dream Whip?
Dream Whip is a shelf-stable powder used to make a whipped topping similar to Cool Whip. The directions state to mix one envelope of DREAM WHIP with 1/2 cup cold milk and 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Beat the mixture in a large bowl until soft peaks form. Refrigerate until ready to use. One envelope makes 2 cups whipped topping.
How long does cherry yum yum last?
When stored properly in the fridge (covered with plastic wrap or a tight-fitting lid), it can last up to a week. Be sure to never double dip a spoon that has been licked, and be sure to never leave at room temperature for more than an hour at max. Cherry yum yum with canned cherry pie filling also lasts in the freezer for 2-3 months.
